As far as I know English is already the official language of Singapore, and I can't see any reason why it shouldn't also replace Dutch in Indonesia soon - I haven't been in Indonesia for some time, but I don't recall any situation during my visit there a few years ago where anybody used or referred to Dutch. Bahasa, English, some kind of Chinese, Arabic plus the local languages (which can have lots of native speakers), but not Dutch.

Yes, English is an official language in Singapore, along with Malay, Tamil, and Mandarin. Singapore is trying to be effectively bilingual in Mandarin and English so it can comfortably communicate within both spheres. Unfortunately, it hasn't been working out so well. Both the English and Mandarin spoken here has deteriorated compared to how it was spoken even just ten years ago. OMG. To tell the truth I can't and won't read NYTimes because of the need to login.
But as far as I know, outside tourist area (Bali, etc), you will need Bahasa Indonesia to survive. There was a rise of "international" school (about 3-5 years ago) which teach mainly in English thus create "English" children, but it is only available to very "rich" and recently the education quality is "questionable" and sometimes considered only marketing gimmick. The rise of English is true, university students need English to get information in internet, and right now, in this "polyglot" forum, we communicate in English. Not only Indonesian, everyone needs it. It rise everywhere. @Iversen I think English is number 1 as foreign language in Indonesia (it is mandatory in school), Mandarin Chinese is on the rise since lots of Chinese descent (+-1%) and its economic rise. Only Dutch descent (1st generation only) and educated older people who can speak Dutch. Arabic is often studied in "Madrasah" (Islamic School) for reading Qur'an therefore not MSA but Classical. In village, people tends to use local language as main language and Bahasa as secondary language. Bahasa Indonesia is "Lingua Franca" and medium of teaching in school. English still can't compete with it in Indonesia. The truth Bahasa Indonesia kill local languages. That's the "Real" trend. My wife is from Indonesia and has only lived in the U.S. for 8 years. She said this story seems fishy and she doesn't know of anyone that doesn't speak Indonesian fluently. She is Chinese Indonesian from Medan so I don't know how that might affect her viewpoint but the story seems a little exaggerated.
