Not German.

It's a 'Kurzname', or first/nick name, from a quick de.wikipedia.org search. I think I've actually heard it before while listening to various German things.

There is a comedian - not a terrible funny one, I have to say - by the name of Atze in German television. Maybe it's him that has made the nickname known.

"Atze" is German slang, nowadays mainly used by Hip-Hop artists from Berlin, and it simply means "friend" (but more like "buddy" or "mate").
There's a wikipedia article on name Atze, which states that Atze was originally an abbreviation of various names beginning with "a", but has been used in the above sense in the Berlin area since 1840.
There's also a music style called Atzenmusik, which combines House with Rap-style vocals. The song Das geht ab! is probably the best-known example and was widely played in German clubs last year.

It's the other way round: "Atze Schröder" is a pseudonym chosen with the meaning of Atze in mind.

Vielen Dank!
I figured it was some type of slang, but I live in the US so I had no idea what it meant.
