I think that the French word draguer means in English. To pick somebody up or chat somebody up or hit on to somebody or give somebody the come on.That's what I think.
A form of seduction I think...

Surely someone else remembers le dragueur from French In Action...
...a hugely unsuccessful pick-up artist.

Definitely not as innocent as "flirt" to me (we use flirt as an anglicism anyway), more openly going for it. Once again, I could be wrong, as someone else said, we do not use it in Québec.
Another anglicism I have heard a lot, mainly with my father's generation, is troller, from "trolling" (nothing to do with internet forums!). I thought this was more relevant to its fishing use, and that it was a funny way to look at what flirting is!

Yeah it's much more forward than a flirt.. It's the kind of word only guys use and has
slightly sleazy
connotations, more than 'chat up', might be closer to the American expression to 'hit on'
someone..

An excellent analysis of the concept is given by Jennifer Yee - a most observant and articulate commentator on inter-cultural differences - at http://danny.oz.au/jennifer/visitor/7.courtship.html
