Self-study, self-study, self-study, self-study ... and self-study

I didn't cast a vote, because it wouldn't have changed the ratio between the options. What I did to learn French:
[X] By language self-study
I started out with a self-study course consisting of a book and 2 audio cassettes.
[X] By attending language classes
Right after this I enrolled in a class that was way above my skill level. During the first lesson I could hardly follow any conversation, but 4 weeks later I was one of the best in class. The classes helped my to get rid of some nasty errors that had crept in without me being aware of it.
[X] Living abroad
I lived in France for one year and a half. I would have stayed there longer and maybe still would be there if I the job I had in Paris hadn't been so horrible and the best alternative offer I got at this time was from the UK.
[X] Travelling to foreign countries
Before I moved over to France I went there a couple of times to test my language skill with native speakers and to detect my weak points.
[X] Other options
Now living in the UK, I get payed for having conversations by e-mail and phone with French people, among other things.
With English my summary would be similar. With Swedish I could tick only the self-study option as of yet. I actually had started learning Swedish 5 years ago when my employer at this time asked me to go to Sweden for a week (I actually lived in Ireland then), but one week in Västerås showed me that basically everyone in Sweden seems to be fluent in English, which was deadly for my motivation to learn Swedish. Now I've started my second attempt, and I won't go back to Sweden until I know the language well enough, so that people there won't switch to English automatically after a few words.

All self-study for me. I would love to travel and use languages more often, but can't do that right now. But learning at home is the next best thing, and it's almost like travel--simulated travel, maybe! When I can read and understand and communicate with sources from around the world, my world at home feels bigger and much better.

I don't study, I just get exposure and end up picking up things every now and then.

3 of the four languages I'm learning are by self-study only, but I did take a Spanish class last year.

I voted self-study, living abroad, and other.
Self-study's obviously working through text-books, going through books etc. In other I include looking at videos online, using chatrooms, and going on forums like this. I have not done so yet but I plan to live abroad in a few years. My previous trips to Iceland have been before I decided to learn the language properly, so I could only just rattle out a few short phrases. I'm sure I will visit again next year though.

I take a class, but I only learn when I self study, so I chose self-study. But I also do chat (or try to) with other people in their native languages, use dictionaries, TV, movies (or I try to, i have a hard time sitting through a whole 30-minute show, let alone a movie.)
