Though I am an American I spent several of my summers living with family in Winnipeg in Manitoba.

A huge portion of the population spoke either Chinese or Ukrainian. Very, very little French.

I live in Winnipeg. It is a statistical fact that there are less Ukrainian speakers than French speakers in Manitoba. I can't remember the last time I heard Ukrainian, although I do hear Chinese on the bus every now and then. I know a lot of people of Ukrainian descent, but they never spoke Ukrainian.

Certain parts of Winnipeg may not have many French speakers, and I assume that is where you stayed, but in certain areas, such as in Saint-Boniface, francophones make up as much as 30-35% of the population and there are many French-language schools in and outside of the city, as well as an active arts scene.

That being said, the importance given to French in Manitoba is certainly not based on demographics, but rather on historical and legal considerations.

Lastly, the Olympics being held in Vancouver does not justify a lesser use of the other official language -- the Olympics were financed by all Canadians.

Indeed, I had a friend who did a summer-long French immersion program in Manitoba. (I don't recall which town or
city though.)

While it is true that French is largely confined to eastern Canada (with notable exceptions such as Franco-Manitobans), Quebec is not the only place where it is a major language. It is widely spoken in the Maritimes and Ontario as well. Even here in upstate New York, I converse with French Canadians in French just about every day.

Whatever outside of Quebec french is at the bottom of the list, I work at a call center that serves all of ontario, and I get way more serbs, mandarin cantoese, punjabia, and Italian, callers and i don't just mean people with accents people with french last names are extremely rare outside of the gatineau region. Its pure racism that the languages aren't official and french is. By the way Quebecois are very much xenophobes, so please don't act like their for adding more languages. Don't get me wrong I love Quebec more than much other provinces but don't kid yourself Quebec is french and the rest is whatever.
The biggest lie is Canada is that were Half french. The truth is there about 1/5 of the pop, Usa has more hispanics per capita.

I heard the exact opposite from every immigrant I met in Québec, including all the
foreign students I had in my French classes.

Is it me, or I'm picking up a bit of an anti-French vibe? Not exactly the kind of
comments I would have expected to find in a forum dedicated to... languages.

You are insulting 7 millions of your French-speaking compatriots, and I am "very much xenophobe"?

I'm not sure whether the Quebecois are xenophobic.

On a racial level, they definitely aren't. More so than any other place I've ever
visited, Quebec is absolutely an inclusive and welcoming society.

However, on an ethno-cultural front, the lines become blurred. Some Quebecois regard
foreign customs and values as being undesirable and aren't afraid of saying so.
