I have had a few of these dreams, but I typically don't remember many dreams on any subject, only a few. I suspect that there are innumerable foreign words coming and going through my mind when it is not fully awake. If I am half-asleep, conscious control of what comes into awareness is flimsy and uncertain, and without any identifiable trigger, I "hear" words and phrases that are just completely disconnected from anything I've really been thinking about. Sometimes this strange drowsy experience includes some foreign words, especially if I was studying just before falling asleep.

I know there's an actual psychological term for this--it might by hypnagogic hallucination but I'd need to look that up. And don't worry, it's normal, not a true hallucination; just the half-awake cerebral cortex spontaneously firing away in a manner you'd not notice when you're fully conscious.

I did have one funny dream recently about NOT being able to speak a foreign language! It seems that I had to help Michaelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel, and I was so worried and distressed about messing the whole thing up, and I was trying to explain why I could not do it but I wasn't able to speak Italian! I think I tried several languages, but no one understood me!

Tonight I dreamt I was in a bar overhearing a Hindi conversation between two african ladies and an indian guy.
As in normal life I didn’t understand 90% of what I heard, but since their conversation was still created by my mind
I wonder whether it was real Hindi or just gibberish.

Whenever I am immersed in a country where they speak some of my strong languages (English, Spanish, French, Italian and German) it takes approximately 4-5 days before I start to think, swear, dream and talk in my sleep in that language. Sometimes I continue to do so for a short while after I come home too, which is why I have spoken French and Spanish in my sleep to my mother, right after coming home from France and Spain, and English to my daughter.

I will be very pleased indeed if I ever reach that level in Russian, which I am now struggling to learn.

Last night was the first time I've ever had any other language than my own in my dream.
I was with my best friend from home and an Indian girl from high school I never actually
met. I only spoke maybe 3 words, but I guess that's better than nothing! The girl was
speaking too and it was at least correct in the dream... But otherwise it was a pretty
short and uninteresting dream though I may just be forgetting things.

Following an interesting evening recently, where I managed to speak German for 4+ hours straight, I not only dreamed in German all night, but woke up and carried on thinking in German for quite a while afterwards too. This isn't the first time this has happened, as it does occur quite inexplicably on occasion with German and even French sometimes, but it was certainly the most intense case of foreign-language dreaming I'd ever experienced.

I dream in Russian a lot, I think. The strange thing was that I had a dream in "English" last night in which I only
understood a few words. I think it had something to do with the fact that I've had such an intense Russian learning
and immersion experience that my mind isn't sure what to make of it. I constantly have the feeling that I'm
supposed to know everything about Russian (and am often expected to by others), even though I heard it for the
first time about 9 months ago.

The "English as a foreign language" motif was an interesting way for my subconscious to express a little frustration
with such ridiculous expectations.

Interesting question - if I've had a dream at least partially in Spanish I don't remember it. I have a feeling that if I moved to a country where Spanish was spoken a lot more I'd start dreaming a LOT more in Spanish instead of English. My friend who moved here (to Canada) from Puerto Rico 2 years ago says that since moving he has had dreams much more often in English now than in his native Spanish.
