I was once in a very heated argument with a Japanese man and I was so angry that I
resorted to English, using all the outrageous English swearwords I could think of -
stuff that would have instantly gotten me into huge trouble with a native speaker. In
the middle of my tirade I said "You stupid *****" and the man picked up on the word
"stupid", translated it into "baka" in his mind, and immediately became massively
aggressive, threatening me with the golf club he happened to be holding at the time. I
managed to escape, and after calming down I kind of saw the funny side, the fact that
he had completely ignored being called a c and a f and so on and so on but went crazy
when I called him "stupid", a word that would rarely cause such huge offense in an
English-speaking country.
DISCLAIMER: I am not in the habit of getting into big arguments with Japanese men
holding golf clubs! The experience was unique in my 14 years in Japan and hopefully
never to be repeated!
