Today when I came into my living room, my 14 year old daughter was watching Jane Austin's Northanger Abbey (for the 3rd time this week) and she had set the subtitles to Icelandic! I asked here what on earth she had done that for. Admittedly I make her watch DVDs in Spanish or French, to increase her exposure, and she had watched a Poirot film with me the day before with Russian subtitles, but Icelandic????? Why hadn't she at least chosen one of the languages which would make some sense, like Spanish, French, German, in fact pretty much everything except Icelandic.

Her answer was that she could only choose between Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Icelandic on this particular DVD, and since she had already seen it twice there was no point in setting the subtitles to Norwegian. Swedish and Danish was no challenge, so she chose Icelandic.

I don't know if she will continue her interest in languages, but she certainly shows potential!

I know there are a lot of young kids here, so you probably have similar stories, or those of you who have kids of your own may have.

Wow that is impressive. Nice regime :P

Would be nice if my mom had done that when I was younger. Best I ever did with subtitles was German subtitles on a WW2 film :)

Actually that is not bad either, and certainly useful! I guess what particularly impressed me in my daughter's case was
a) She did this of her own free will - I only showed up towards the end of the film
b) It is not a language she studies or intends to study

That's pretty exciting to hear! I certainly wouldn't have done that at that young an age (not past vague curiosity anyway). I hope she continues. I never got any influence and still don't, although in the UK I don't expect to.
