I think you might be doing it backwards - choosing a language/culture and then forcing her interest upon it. (Well, you say she's been learning it since 2008, so presumably she chose it herself, but you are the one who seems to be pushing the issue and insisting that it MUST be French even though she's obviously not interested in French). Despite being a language lover, there are some languages/cultures in which I can't bring myself to be interested (French being one of them), and I imagine that no amount of prodding from a friend or relative would change the way I feel.
Have you ever had a friend who's really obnoxious trying to push their favorite band onto you? At first you might be mildly receptive, but the bottom line is that you either like it or you don't, and after a little while of their not-so-subtle attempts and bringing it up at every turn, you might start to even develop an irrational distaste for a band that you might have otherwise liked. Although your intentions are wonderful, I'm sure you wouldn't like to turn her off to French permanently - or even worse, to language-learning in general. If the Avril Lavigne CD idea doesn't inspire a change of heart, then I say give up on French and find one more suited to her interests. Maybe she has romantic images of Italy, thinks Vikings are too cool, or is fascinated with East Asia. Or maybe she has more specific interests, like a certain genre of music, a sport, or indie films. Also, people's interests change over time, so don't feel so discouraged that she doesn't share your love of French. Now I am in love with Latin America, but when I was 14 I thought Spanish was 'ghetto' and unfortunately had no interest in learning it. I'm sure she'll awaken to French on her own terms, sooner or later :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
