I remember one of my German professors always made fun of Dutch and didn't like it, due to the constant use of diminutives. She said Dutch just sounded silly to her because of this.

I think Dutch sounds great. I find it a wonderful language, with a huge amount of very
interesting material in science, history, literature, and all other aspects of its rich culture.. And it sounds
great.

Thank you very much!

A softer language than German, though I am not keen on the g sound. I prefer the accent of Dutch-speaking Belgium to the one in the Netherlands.

Hmm I think we should be careful here, as this is a slippery slope...I mean, if we all of a sudden label Dutch a beautiful language, what next? Do the tones of Mandarin go from being comical to being musical? Might we even go so far as to consider the guttural sounds of Arabic a pleasing attribute, rather than simply passing the language off as harsh and angry, and then getting on with our day? Just how many uninformed generalisations must we part with before you're satisfied? Well?!

Playing with fire...

Well, I'm probably biased since my native language includes harsh guttural sounds, but I actually really love the sound of them. In French I don't miss them because you have the -r which is kind of throaty, but when I speak English I miss using the back of my throat. I love the sound of German, Arabic, Hebrew etc, because I think the harsh sounds give it something extra. It makes them kind of hardcore. ;-)

Awesome thread by the way. It's always interesting to hear what your native language sounds like to others and it's nice to read some a bit more varied opinions on Dutch than the usual "it sounds ugly".

I love the sound of Dutch.
Don't want to learn it, but I just really enjoy hearing it and seeing it written.
It's just an allround pleasant language.

I've always found it slightly amusing that people go on about how gutteral and harsh German is, when they probably heard Dutch and thought it was German.

great post, so many think German is a language that's spoken in the throat with all these strange sounds but except for a few dialects it really isn't pronounced that way. Dutch has more of these sounds.

However, I second what so many others have said, dutch is still quite beutiful in its own way. I enjoy listening to it, also to see how much I can understand knowing German.

Dutch, Low German, and Arabic have taken the places for my favourite-sounding languages, though I'm still susceptible to Finnish's hypnotic rhythms...
