Good idea, though I also doubt that I will be able to find many interested parties in my area.
Area: Gettysburg/Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In the summertime I may even be willing to do Frederick or Hagerstown, Maryland, but we'll see.
Currently studying: Spanish, German, Bulgarian, Dutch.
Currently speaking: English, German (and minimal Spanish, Dutch)
If anyone is in my area, maybe we can work something out. Would be cool to meet other language enthusiasts, even if we are not learning the same tongues.

Well, it is almost laughably unlikely, but if there is a Georgian speaker living in Tokyo
who reads this site and wants help with English in return for giving me some Georgian
practice I'd love to set up an exchange!

This is a good idea, but as others have been saying it seems unlikely that people will be able to find language exchange partners in the right locations with the right language combinations. I think it would be cool, though, just to meet other language enthusiasts if nothing else.
I'm currently in Japan (Yokohama), and I'm a native English speaker with a high level of Japanese, so I could probably help anyone with those two languages. I'm conversational in Mandarin and French and would like to practice those. It'd also be great to get some help with Thai, in which I'm still a beginner/low-intermediate.
Even if our languages don't match up, though, feel free to PM me if you're in the area and just want to talk about language learning. =D

The idea is great - and if we do not all find a match, perhaps someone will!
I am located in Oslo, and I am qualified to teach English, Spanish and French (that's at least what my papers say :-).
I am trying to learn Russian, and would be happy to make any kind of exchange in those languages. If there is anyone in Oslo who would like to meet up for Italian or German conversation, I am up for that (but I am not qualified to teach it!). I would also be interested in high level conversation in French, as I do not get to do that very often.
If nothing else, it would be cool just to meet up for a cup of coffe and a chat. In any language.
