In Polish climate, no. In India, I am not sure. But that's beside the point, which is that leather-working and shoemaking is -in many cultures- very far from a 'decent' occupation. Having to deal with dead animals I guess.

As for shoemaking, apart from that 'dead animal' aspect there's this notion that feet soles are the lowest parts of the body also in a figurative sense, and that the shoes are always dirty etc. etc. Yuck. Remember the pictures from Baghdad where they would hit the Saddam statue's head with their shoes? That wasn't a sign of respect :)

So, shoemaker essentialy makes disgusting things from filthy material. Not a job you would like to take (if you live in one of those cultures, that is)

As for the actual usage - just google the word and browse the hits, you should get a feel of how it is used. If you can't figure it out yourself, than maybe you're not ready yet for non-standard Russian.

I don't think you'll be able to find anyone capable of giving you a sound grammatical overview of the word in question, unless you come across someone with degree in scatolinguistics. People just use it (or not), they rarely analyse it.

On a unrelated note - yesterday I've read a paper on Hindi insults and apparently, ullu ('owl'; macron on the second u) or ullu ka bacca (owl's son) are words you can use to call someone stupid. Interesting, given all those western associations (owl = wisdom).

It is likewise an insult to call someone 'camar'='shoemaker', for more obvious reasons.


The people on WordReference were happy to help explain the nuances of ебать, actually.

I do like the Swearing Dictionary though...thanks.

Here's some I know in Spanish (pretty much all of them from natives)

callate la boca-apparently means "shut the f*** up"
chinga te-f*** you

pendejo-something along the lines of "dumbass"
That's all I can think of for now :\ I know more Spanish swearwords than colors. I always use them on my Hispanic friends, they normally say something back.

I can swear in about 3 more languages, even if it's just one word
German-Ficken-f***?
Mandarin-sounds something like gan/gon
Latin-damno tuum (I condemn you)

that's all I can remember right now...
