In my opinion there are only eight languages which can claim universal importance:

French
English
German
Latin
Ancient Greek
Arabic
Sanskrit
Classical Chinese

Those are all languages of religion and philosophy^^ (I think you can add hebrew, no ?)

However I think you do not formulate it well, especially as regards to the word "importance". What does this word
mean ?
In fact, it is not those languages themselves which are "important", but the culture they carry, and the
word "important" means here that this culture have had (and have still) an influence particularly important on
the others culture.
However that does not denote necessarily a superiority of the culture, let alone the language
which carried it, because the life and death of a culture are too often determined by history, war, etc, and not by
its value (it is often right, but not always, I agree : jewish culture, for example, has something specific which has
triumphed over the "rules" of History, and survived despite the ebbs and (above all) flows of its history).

I did not add Hebrew (nor Pali) precisely because its relevance is mainly restricted to a single dimension: religion.

The other languages I mention have given voice to the broadest possible range of human experience, along with being the carriers of the world's great traditions.

I don't think Mandarin is a universally important language. It's honestly only important in one country of the
world. In my opinion, the most universally important languages are English, French, and Spanish, as all these
languages are geographically and culturally widespread, and have many speakers.
