Here's a question I'm polling to you guys:

Have you ever learned a language to an advanced level without ever visiting a country speaking the language? This does not mean you haven't since visited a country speaking the language you've learned, only that you've achieved a notable level in it beforehand.

Iversen, and Arguelles excluded. I'm talking about the normies like me.
ie: I wanna see who pulled off utilizing the information age to their advantage, or those who have pulled off this feat before the info age.

This also isn't a question pertaining to myself, I'm just curious.

Depends on what you mean by "an advanced level", but I learned English in school, and that was before I had ever
heard about the Internet.

OK, I've gotten to that level in French without ever leaving the U.S. My Goodreads. My polyglot friend tells me my accent is good, FWIW.

I reached native fluency in English without leaving Germany.

I can definitely read novels in French and Esperanto as well, but I'm not sure if you'll
count those because I spent a couple weeks each in an environment where the target
language was spoken before I reached that level. I'm pretty sure I could have reached the
level without travelling though.

Sprachprofi, wait English ISN'T your native language? like you were not raised bilingually? :O

As for the question,

I can read Spanish really well for studying it for 4 years, Harry Potter and other advanced novels. Poetry does give me a little trouble, but I get hung up on anywhere for 0-5 words per page.

I will not include my Spanish since I grew up in Miami, but I learned French and German
to a high level without visiting or living in the countries that speak them. I did spend
a summer in Germany in a study abroad program, but that was after 3 years of German study
in college.
