David J. Peterson, an expert language creator from the Language Creation Society (LCS), has been chosen to create the Dothraki language for HBO’s upcoming fantasy series Game of Thrones, based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.
When Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss needed a language for the Dothraki, Martin’s race of nomadic warriors, they turned to the Language Creation Society. The LCS solicited and vetted a number of proposals for the Dothraki language from its pool of experts, with Peterson’s proposal ultimately being selected by the Game of Thrones production team.
Peterson drew inspiration from George R.R. Martin’s description of the language, as well as from such languages as Russian, Turkish, Estonian, Inuktitut and Swahili. However, the Dothraki language is no mere hodgepodge, babble or pidgin. It has its own unique sound, an extensive vocabulary of more than 1,800 words and a complex grammatical structure.

It was only a short while ago that we had Na'vi, now there's Dothraki. Are conlangs to have a greater role in future Sci-Fi/Fantasy series? I certainly hope so!

They'll need a lot of vulgarities in the conlang if the film is to bear any similarity with the books.

I dunno, but most conlangs don't seem that big a deal to me; here's to hope that there's something in the structure of this one that is unique anyway, and also that the actors can pronounce it!
It's a shame HBO gave up their option for making a Preacher series though. The owner who cancelled it cited inappropriate content or something? I don't see how this fantasy series is any less violent/gory than that.

I looked this up briefly. Surely it's being cancelled because of controversial religious content rather than violence.

Meh, it's more due to the whim of the (then) new owner IMO.
Some movies aired on HBO channels have controversial religious content as well: such as The Order, I don't think True Blood portrays a very sympathetic view of Christianity either. I'm guessing budget and casting played a greater role.
Anyway this is a little OOT, although if it comes to adaptations of other media, I have to say I think Keanu Reeves is just wrong for the role of Spike Spiegel.

Lame.
Conlang to appear on show and I don't watch TV. Nor pay for cable. Nor would I want to.
*sigh* back to my Nook and reading in a real language*.
(* My definition of real means it's ACTUALLY spoken by people as a means of
communication. TV languages do not fit this bill)

The flaw: it's based on fragments of language in the book. The book wasn't written by a conlanger. According to the article, prominent features in the book are SVO order and lack of copular verbs. This sounds a bit dull.
