Hello everyone, I am doing a small survey for a research project and want to see if
anyone is interested in answering a few questions. For a
little background, I am a Spanish major and also taking some linguistics classes and
this is for my linguistics class. This is a research
project a few people and I have been given for our final project to present to the
class. The topic is the effect of technology on languages
(other than English) and I would love to get some feedback from a group of people I
know have a serious passion for languages as well as a
knowledge of technology and the Internet. I will post the few questions here and you
can either answer them on the forums or message me with
the answers if you don't want others to see your responses. A small part of the
project will also be English's effect upon other languages
through technology and the internet so if you have any personal examples or a story
about English "netspeak" appearing in your native tongue
feel free to share them! Thanks to everyone who takes the time to answer these few
questions and I hope this will spark an interesting
conversation among us.

Survey Questions:
1.
a. Do you regularly communicate through email, text or IM in a language other
than English?
b. If so, have you noticed any standard abbreviations like “lol” in said language?

2.
a. Give 1 "X" if you recognize and know the “Netspeak”.
b. Give 2 "X"s if you have seen or used the same “Netspeak” in a non-English
conversation.

lol, jk, b/c, imho, lamo,
l8r, w/e, irl, bff, lqtm,
<3, bb, brb, np, 404 ,wtf,
bbl, ty, 1337, wtg, imo
pls, cu, wbatm, rofl, ic, yw

3. Do you think that the English speaking world dominates the Internet? Why or why
not?
4. What are your feelings toward abbreviations (“netspeak”) used in email, text or IM?
5. Could Internet slang (“netspeak”) be considered an emerging diglossia situation?
Why or why not?
6. How greatly do you believe audience affects the level of formality in Internet
communications?
7. Do you believe that non-English speakers are at a disadvantage when using the
Internet? Why or why not?

I look forward to the responses. Thanks again!
