Hi guys!
I've been learning Japanese for a while now and I've noticed one of the biggest problems for me, and other learners, is not being able to stay motivated.
If you're a self-learner like me, if you don't have motivation to learn, you wont. And even if you stop learning for a little while and pick it back up again later, you're going to forget a lot. Forgetting material will cause you to waste time reviewing stuff you knew at one point in time.
If anyone needs constant help staying motivated to learn Japanese, I recommend checking out this blog and subscribing by RSS for constant motivation: Motivation to learn Japanese. The blog updates with movie reviews, book reviews, motivational posts, and other stuff that will keep your interests from dying out. I highly recommend it to stay motivated!

I'm not learning Japanese, staying motivated is a problem for all self-learners.
I like to read/listen to native materials, because it makes me see that I still have more to learn (I don't like to stop things halfway through, I like finishing things I start).
Different people need different ways to stay motivated, though.

I stayed motivated in learning Japanese when I stopped learning Japanese and instead started using Japanese. Of course in the process of using I was forced to learn quite a bit...

Make some Japanese friends or find a Japanese significant other. You could try a hobby that uses Japanese, like origami or a martial art such as aikido, judo or karate. Rent Japanese movies or visit Japanese restaurants. Take up Zen practice. In other words find something about the culture that interests you. Just drilling vocabulary, grammar and kanji is very boring, and as someone else mentioned, would be boring for any language, not just Japanese.
