I don't know about you, but this is one of my main pastimes other than learning Spanish.

What about you? Do you go on the internet sometimes for the sole purpose of helping others for free?

I hate helping people with their English. It doesn't do them any good. I don't believe
languages can be taught.

Then how do people learn languages?

I don't love it, per se, but I do like doing it sometimes. I don't mind doing it on Livemocha or correcting my Taiwanese friend (whose been in America for 2 years and has very good English for being here that long)

I didn't learn English in school, just by immersing myself after junior high.

I think you misunderstood the word 'help.'

Helping someone could be simply correcting their English, having them ask a question about word choice or grammar and giving them the right answer. That is not impossible, that is definitely learning.

I don't mind. I get a lot of people to help me with my German. Why not help in return?

I enjoy it, as it's the only time I really think about the English language.

It's good when people upload their pronouncation MP3s, because I've realised that my understanding of English phonetics is completely hopeless, and I think I need to sort it out as a step to improving my own foreign language accents, so I'm probably learning more than the poster.

I would love to help native Dutch-speakers with their English because they help me with Dutch. But I've yet to find one who really needs any help in English. And it is usually difficult to know if they would welcome any 'improvement' to their already excellent English. I'd really like to find a Dutch speaker at an ability in English similar to my ability in Dutch (generally B2, with C1 for reading). But that is unlikely.

I like helping any English learner. I used to offer 'improvements' on this site when I saw them. But more often than not, it appeared most didn't really want to see these 'improvements'. So now I offer help only to those who appear to want some help.
