Latin American Spanish is very different than the European counterpart in some ways and they are both alike in other ways. As it has already been said, it all depends on where you are going to be visiting or living. Think about it like this; there are different kinds of English spoken around the globe.
You have the British English, the Australian English, and the American English. Even within America, you have various sub groups of English (southern, ebonics, "yankee", etc).
If a person from another country were to learn British English, and then come and visit Alabama or Wyoming, USA, they could still get around and be understood, but it would make things awkward and a bit difficult I think as opposed to that person learning American English.
The same principle could apply to learning Spanish. Hope this helps:)

Another somewhat small difference between the two is "Leismo" which is more common in Castilian Spanish for second and thirst person indirect object pronoun (Also direct pronouns replacing lo and la in some dialects). In latin America however Leismo is usually replaced by Loismo.
