I was watching the Mexico-Argentina World Cup game (which is surprising, I'm not a soccer fan at all) on Telemundo. They were talking about how much time was left in the game and they referred to the game as "el partido" instead of "el juego." I know that partido can mean game, but is it used to refer to sports games more often than juego is?

In my (limited) experience, "el partido" can be considered "match" as in a football match. I know in football it's always "el partido de futbol," or at least in most cases. I've seen it used in basketball and baseball as well.

It seems that it is more common to use 'partido' rather than 'game' when referring to a specific match. That also applies to Spanish from Spain.

I think the difference is this:

"el partido de fútbol" = the football/soccer game (a specific match)
"el juego de fútbol" = the game of football/soccer (in general)

I was watching the same game and noticed another pair of words whose distinction is unclear, "el gol" and
"la porteria" (sorry no accents). Are these two interchangeable? I kept thinking they were talking about
Argentina's "porqueria" and was quite confused.

When it means a match, game can be translated as partido or partida, but not juego. So
yes, we could say it is used more often, as often as all the time.
