I was watching the same game and noticed another pair of words whose
distinction is unclear, "el gol" and
"la porteria" (sorry no accents). Are these two interchangeable? I kept thinking they
were talking about
Argentina's "porqueria" and was quite confused.

portería = the physical goal
gol = the act of scoring a goal

I was watching the Mexico-Argentina World Cup game (which is surprising, I'm not a
soccer fan at all) on Telemundo. They were talking about how much time was left in the
game and they referred to the game as "el partido" instead of "el juego." I know that
partido can mean game, but is it used to refer to sports games more often than juego is?

When it means a match, game can be translated as partido or partida, but not juego. So
yes, we could say it is used more often, as often as all the time.
Alright thanks, that's what I was wondering.

Perhaps they were in fact talking about Italy?
