I'm going to be in a Yemen for a few weeks and wanted to get a book or something for a quick crash course in basic Arabic before I left. Just looking to learn what useful travel phrases I can before I leave.
I don't know how different the Arabic in Yemen is than anywhere else, from what I can gather its closer to Saudi Arabian Arabic than any other dialect.
Anyways, if anyone has any recommendations on a good book/website for this purpose, it would be much appreciated. As you can tell, I'm not very familiar with how the dialects differ from country to country...
Thanks

There are books available on Yemeni Arabic, Peace Corps made one, and here is one with full text digitized, but none came with audio.
If you can find good audio material on Saudi Arabic, FSI for example, use it and you'll will be understood even in the smallest towns.
If you really want to learn Yemeni Arabic and understand people, start with the following:
I want: Saudi: Abgha, Yemeni: Ashtee
I go: Saudi: Aruh, Yemeni: Aseer
I look: Saudi: Ashoof, Yemeni: Absir
your(female): Saudi: k, Yemeni: sh,
How are you(f) doing? Saudi: Kaif haalik? Yemeni: Kaif haalish
Future tense:
I will/am going to: Saudi: ha, Yemeni: sha
you/he/she/they/ will : Saudi: ha, Yemeni: ain (ع)
For example: I'm going to the market: Saudi: Harooh la ssuq. Yemeni: Shaseer la ssuq.
And the most important word to know in Yemen is "to chew" as in "to chew qat" : khazzin
For example: Do you(m) want to chew qat with us: chishtee tikhazzin maana?

I appreciate the info. I'll look for a good Saudi Arabic Guide/Audio companion...
