The great thing about these kinds of threads is that the fickle among us get make the most of them. :) Hm, what are my seven this month? How about:

1. French
2. Japanese
3. German
4. Mandarin
5. Russian
6. Hindi
7. Afrikaans

I am not inclined to believe in "Rule of Seven" - I think that the number of languages which we are capable to learn is dependent on such factors as motivatiion, time, memory etc. - as aforementioned, so I won't write any more because it would be just rephrasing somebody's posts :) My list:

English
German
French
Spanish
Italian
Portuguese
Arabic

First there was a list of 10, then a list of 5, followed by a list for each continent and now it's a list of 7 (sorry if I missed anyone's list out). What will we think of next? ;-)

Anyway, here's mine:
Arabic
Russian
Mandarin
Cantonese
Japanese
Swahili
Korean

From a practical standpoint, I'll probably stick with my three priorities for now: Spanish, Portuguese, and German. However, if I ever get to a high level of proficiency in all three, I'll probably go for Italian, Swedish, Arabic, and Russian afterwards. I'd like to see if I can't break the Rule of Seven one day and maybe even add Japanese or Chinese to that :)

Thanks for all the input to my question.

Depending on the languages seven may be a low number or a very high number. I have learnt six Romance languages to a level where I can watch television or discuss with locals about most subjects that interest me (though I don't know enough 'chistes' to participate in the hyperactive Spanish thread, -sorry). Add a bunch of Germanic languages and I'm already beyond the sacred number seven. Of course you can boost the demands for fluency to a level where all languages that you don't use daily in discussion at an academical level or with street kids - equally difficult tasks! - are rejected, but for what purpose? Besides the rule of seven doesn't take in account the degree of relatedness, possibilities to actively use the languages in question and so on. Learning six Romance languages is less of a feat than learning Basque, Japanese and Swahili.
