For the past, I'd try Proto-Uralic or Nostratic.

For the future, it's hard to say what I'd want to learn since none of us know what kind of forms or positions contemporary languages will have assumed by then.

It depends on how far away in time will you travel, it also depends where are you traveling. But the right answer would be to pick the lingua franca of such time-space coordinate. Maybe in the future languages could be obsolete and people would use telepathy, who knows!
