I just came across this post on the Librivox forum. The person who posted this really made a great compilation that some others here may find useful.

Lots of useful resources there, particularly for less-studied languages. I'll have a look at the Tamil texts.

Many thanks for this posting. While the books linked are rather old (the Turkish one uses Arabic script), there's a wealth of material here. I'd especially recommend the vocabulary lists in Thimm's Self-Taught series. They're not so short as to be useless, but not so long that you can't actually learn them. A caution: Some of the vocabulary is outdated, so if you encounter a word that seems unfamiliar, use a modern dictionary to verify if that's still the word in use. Once you've done this, however, you'll have a nice list to skim in your free time, put into your SRS, etc.
