Just a little idea here (it's probably silly, so feel free to dispel it of course), but with all the great posts, wonderful techniques, and interesting characters we meet throughout the year on this forum, wouldn't it be fun to have some kind of award ceremony at the end of each year to recognise and celebrate the most interesting contributors and contributions. Just like at the Oscars, we could have different categories to vote on, e.g. "Polyglot of the Year", "Learning Technique of 2010", "Inspiring Achievements", "Funniest Posts", etc.
You see I think the Team TAC challenge was an excellent idea, in that it invites everyone to meet their language challenges head-on each year, and enables members to draw motivation and guidance from a wealth of supportive camaraderie and shared experiences. Perhaps a fun new feature like an award ceremony at the end of the year could help build upon this invigorating sense of identity and fun within the HTLAL community even further. Just imagine the possibilities...you could even give the ceremony a funny fancy name like the "Glosscars", the "LALAs (Learn Any Language Awards)", the "Nobelingo Prize", or even simply the HTLAL "Highlights" (I'm sure you can come up with a lot better)! As I said before, it's probably just a silly idea, but I thought it might pique your curiosity and lighten things up a little. What do you think?

I don't like the idea of making a competition out of our forum community. We have a voting system and this gives recognition enough.

I wasn't really thinking along the lines of competition so much, but more along the lines of recalling some of the more interesting, inspiring and fun "highlights" of each year. A kind of looking back on the year that's gone, and looking forward to the new. It doesn't even have to necessarily involve votes or such. Who knows...it may even help strengthen the sense of community within the forum, and provide new members with an interesting summary of previous years. It's just a suggestion... ;)

I agree with Fasulye that I wouldn't like it if it were a competition of sorts, but I do like the idea of pointing out some of the best / funniest / etc. posts.
I recognize that we have the voting system which does indeed provide recognition, but only Pro Members are able to click on the "X votes" next to a person's name and see all of the posts that have been marked as helpful. The bulk of us lowly non-paying peasants can only see a few, and that's after watching a ticker count out how many days we've been on the forum and how many posts we've posted. :-)
(And to head off anyone who may feel the desire to argue with me about the system: I'm simply pointing it out, I have no problem with the pay features. Just as a poor university chap, I can't really afford the price tag right now.)

Teango, we must be some sort of twin souls!
I think it's a great idea. I think adding more community and "forum culture" to this board could make it so much
more interesting.
Trying to find members and posts with the "Top Language Learning Technique" and "Most Dedicated Learner",
"Most Baffling Result" or "Polyglot Athlete of The Year" could also help the "method miners" among us to identify
the gems in the ocean of posts that this forum is.
Ideally, no one should feel any pressure from competition, but perhaps having these kind of awards could inspire
some people to work more passionately with their languages. That would of course benefit not only themselves, but
also everyone else at the board.

I think it's a good idea! It would be very important, though, to be clear in some ways:
--Who determines the result(s)?
--Exactly how are these determinations made?
--If we want to encourage "forum culture" we need to be careful to not become too exclusive, and welcome all participants as long as the forum rules are respected.
--It should differ, in some not-overly-serious form, from the voting system already in place.
--It should be (I think) a recognition and not a competition, otherwise there is potential for hurt feelings, in the event that an excellent contribution is overlooked. Maybe multiple "winners" could be designated?
I, for example, just might get upset if I am not deemed to be the forum's most oddly relentless tagger, because when one tags a few hundred posts, that's a nice contribution; when one approaches 5,000 tags, however, that's a disease. I know this. Maybe I can be the member chosen to go to Tag Rehab.
But seriously, I have done this to help, but also to find the very content that your suggestion would bring to the forefront. There is a an amazing amount of good stuff here, but, inevitably, some of it just gets lost. I have also been thinking about this as I go about reading posts.
Whichever categories of recognition would exist, if the idea becomes reality, would best serve us all if they allow for numerous styles and opinions about language learning, as long as these are respectful, honest and well-expressed. The diversity and, sometimes, the controversy regarding ideas discussed here is one of the features I value most about this forum. There are many different kinds of quality posts here and that's helpful as well as inspiring.
I love the name "The LALA Awards"!
Just some thoughts -- again, I think it could be a lot of fun and useful, too!
