I learnt French and some Italian at high school. The teaching wasn't great, but somehow my brain made sense of it.
Every few years after leaving school, I'd try picking up learning materials at home, in the library or in a bookshop, and try to pick up where I left off. I never did more than an hour with any book -- I just couldn't get into it.
I got the Michel Thomas Spanish course just before I started studying English Language at university level (studying grammar for native speakers) and a few months later I took an intensive short course in Gaelic with a very good teacher.
Those three things -- the MT Spanish, the university English, the intensive Gaelic -- all showed me how to learn. Most of my Gaelic after that was self-directed (with the help of a good book and a supportive internet community).

I have nearly completed French Linguaphone Plus course which has taken me almost
8 months to complete and I plan to recommence with the Linguaphone Plus course in
August but with less study time than previously.I will recommence with Hugo's
French in Three Months course next month and I will finish with the Hugo course in August. Then I will recommence with the Linguaphone Plus course.
Also I log on to TF1(French T.V) and listen to it for 30 mins a day.I had also spent
5-6 months in France.I'd like to return to France to live, but unfortunately that's not possible at the moment because of the economic climate and family sentiments.
However as a compromise I plan to sign with the Alliance Francaise in September
and take-up evening classes with them for a while at least.Going to the Alliance
Francaise is like entering a little bit of France in my home country.

Study by yourself? - For Dutch, used Assimil with Ease, Anki to learn words and read/listened. (For Portuguese I'm using Michel Thomas)
Move to a foreign country? - Have been in The Netherlands for a year but I didn't move explicitly to learn Dutch. I started learning after I moved here. I took two beginners courses when I first got here which got me off to a good start and made it enjoyable.
Meet speakers of the language you are studying? - I live with native speakers who I regularly ask questions about Dutch

I forgot to mention.I had previously tried the Michel Thomas French course, but the
gruff voice of Michel Thomas irritated me a lot and the 2 students in the course.
Well the Englishman was not too bad,but the American woman annoyed me completely. The
American woman clearly dose'nt have a clue in how to learn French...

Self-study. For French, I started with Michel Thomas, a grammar text, and a vocabulary text. I read several dual-language books and now I'm reading on my own.
For Italian, I have just started, and I'm using Assimil. I love it :)

I'm still in secondary school, studying Irish and German. I have learned Irish since about 1994 and German since
about 2003, but I am still quite weak at both. This summer I plan on working on German intensively and perhaps
taking up French.
Well, today for example I wrote a two page letter in German to my friend in Biberach in Germany, which was great
practice. I thoroughly recommend getting a penpal who speaks your target language on inerpals.net.
