I think that for me the best method is the following:
First you have to learn the grammar inside and out, and I think for this the old school method is the best--
books, drills, etc. Boring, I know, but if you want to learn to construct sentences by yourself it's very important.
Next, listening to music in the target language after you've got the basic grammar down (you can even start
earlier, but you need to know the grammar at least decently to be able to really benefit) because songs give you
an idea as to how people really talk and also are repetitive and easy to get into your head so you can actually
pick up grammatical constructions and are able to recall them more easily if you hear them repeatedly in songs.
Next, I would move on to simple texts like children's stories and then soon after that newspapers. Once you can
do that, you should watch TV or videos on the internet like on YouTube in your target language. Start out with
subtitles also in the target language if you can you can see and hear what is being said. Eventually, you
shouldn't need them anymore.
This is what I do, and it works well if you stick with the plan and have a little patience. It's really amazing what
kind of results you can have.
