One is often tempted to make an analogy between the talent for languages and the talent for learning music. I don't agree because I think they are similar but different skills. Whereas everybody can learn their native language perfectly at pretty much the same age and in the same stages, some music students do exhibit an exceptional ability at a very early age.
Some children can be behind in their native language, and some can be ahead. The other day I heard a story about some 13 year old in college (here in America) who started reading at 3 or 4, when most kids start at 5/6 and some don't get it down until much later.

To master a language to even just a CEFR:B2 level, however, requires serious work.

How about those who do it effortlessly, with very little need to study?

What is B2? This forum only accepts certified courses as proof, and you're unlikely to pass the exams without studying.

Here is Felix, the Belgian Polyglot sharing his experiences with learning languages. He certainly has a gift as he doesn't focus on grammar at all but naturally assimilates it. I think we should all follow his example.

What example? Being one of the approximately 2% of the world's population with a natural knack for doing this? Sorry, but it's too late to be born a second time with different genes and in a different environment.---

I for one don't study at all, but that doesn't mean that what I do doesn't require effort.

Yeah, I agree. As I said earlier, there are ways of learning languages that don't require study but still do require intellectual effort, although a lot of people wouldn't recognize that as it is "natural" effort, just like when a child learns their native language (not to say that the processes are exactly the same). I don't know how you work, Bao, but I'd guess a lot of exposure, reading and conversation?

A1-A2-B1-B2-C1-C2 are the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (for languages). A lot of institutes, schools and universities deliver B2 certificates all over Europe and it's the level you need to enter undergraduate university in any given country if your native language isn't the one spoken where you're studying and you haven't passed this country's high school graduation exams. I'd say B2 is a far from perfect but totally operational level and I'd say that's "basic fluency" according to this forum's classification.
And if a language test is well made enough, yes, you should be able to pass the exams without studying or following a course. It tests your level in the language, not whether you've followed a particular course. Of course not everyone can be in conditions where they don't need to study at all (although I think past a certain level you can progress with an all-passive+ conversation method, I can't see how anyone could go from beginner to intermediate in an unrelated language without studying at all except if they're actually in the country and someone is willing to gesticulate a lot at them.)
But going from B1 to B2 can perfectly be done without conventional studying.

more I think about this, more it seems to me that when we are talking about 'gift for
languages, we are actually talking about two things which are not specific only for
language learning - IQ and enthusiasm.
