There is some early research that seems to point out that the language we speak affects the things we focus on. One interesting example is that when shown pictures of a car driving along a road, English speakers tend to look at the road, whereas German speakers looked at the destination - and the research suggests that it is language differences that cause that.

Interesting read, though at first glance, cultural differences strike me as a better explanation for the cited road example. We know people from different cultural backgrounds have different habits whereas we are still unsure to what extent or if at all linguistic differences manifest themselves in the cognitive process. I'm sure the actual research paper accounts for this and is more explicit.
