The best feature of the Michael Thomas method is that it is not repetition (it is, but not just rote robot-style). There are clear explanations that help the student who is struggling with a concept to "get it" or "click". I have taken 2 formal Spanish courses and not learned as much in both of them as I did in the basic MT course. It is, of course, just a tool, though, so it is best used with several other resources.

The Live Mocha setup is sheer genius. It is a site that matches you up with others where you are interacting on a real communication basis in sets of information. I found it very helpful in my beginner stage and return to it for review at times.

I would also recommend SharedTalk. This website is good for matching up a learner of one language with a learner of the opposite. It has basic text and vocal chat options along with text chat rooms so there are lots of chances to practice what you are learning. I have had excellent results with this and my comprehension is really improving.

I would also highly recommend Mnemosyne for rote vocabulary drilling. I try to pound 100-200 words into my wee-little-brain each day. Even if I am very tired and I just force myself to go over and over and over and I feel like nothing is sticking, the next day, they are magically in there and I can usually use them after sleeping on it.

(The links to everything I recommend are in the links post in another thread, plus some suggestions from other learners.)

Good luck.
