Apologies if this has been asked before but I wasn't able to find anything via the search or tag functions.
Does anyone know of any good resources for Cantonese? Either web sites or books? There doesn't seem to be that much material around. What do people think of the DLI course? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/phorum/ probably has the most active forum of any website for Cantonese-learners.
The same website also has a good dictionary (you can change the romanization to either JyutPing or Yale once you register). And many other stuff on that website as well, as well as many other posts pointing out learning materials. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Probably the best free resource for Cantonese is FSI Cantonese. If you go through that all the way through you'll probably have pretty good conversation skills.
I've only had a quick look at DLI Cantonese but I didn't think that much of it. It seems too hard for beginners and the audio quality is not great at all. I've bought Teach Yourself Cantonese & worked through Colloquial Cantonese in evening classes before but to be honest, I think the learning curve is too steep. Too much vocabulary introduced each lesson, with not enough practice to learn it all. I think it might be good to work through one or both of these books after you've gone through FSI Cantonese though, when you've got a bit more familiar with the language. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
