Cool!
If they succeeded in making some near-perfect text-to-text translator, they can develop "intonation recognizer" and a more nuanced TTS.

Unlikely in my opinion. If you're simply trying to ONLY have touristy talks or business situations, it's possible that this would work fine.

Personally for me, having an in-depth and personal discussion with someone would lose the breadth and depth of the conversation if I had to wait for my Trekky translator to do all the work.

That and... well... good luck with idioms Google. New ones get created daily in most languages that I can think of.

Enter Andrew (A), Bernadette (B), Google Real-Time (G), TransModules en2fr (GF), fr2en (GE)

A: Hi Bernadette. How are things?
GF: Salut Bernadette. Comment ça va ?
B: Salut Andrew. Très bien.
GE: Hi Andrew. Very well.
A: I'm just calling to ask whether there are any news about what we discussed last week.
A: Did you receive my e-mail?
GF: Avez-vous reçu mon e-mail ?
B: Oui, je vous ai ... ehm ... je t'ai déjà repondu.
GF: Pardon, Madame.
G: to itself: setLanguageLevel(ON_FAMILIAR_TERMS)
GE: Yes, I've already responded to you.
A: Oh, great. Let me check my inbox...
GF: Ah, grandiose. Laisse-moi vérifier ma boîte de réception.
A: Yes, here it is. I don't understand the second sentence.
GF: Oui, le voici. Je ne comprends pas la deuxième phrase.
A: Looks like this was translated by this freaky Google tool.
G: to itself: logIncident(HOSTILE_CUSTOMER, getUserID("Andrew"))

(break)

A: Bernadette? Are you still there?
GF: Bernadette ? Es-tu encore là ?
B: Oui, je suis là.
GE: Yes, I follow there.
A: Sorry? What do you mean by "I follow there"?
GE: Sorry Mister. Google didn't understand you. Please repeat what you just said.
A: I said: What do you mean by "I follow there"?
G: to itself: logForReview(INCOMPREHENSIBLE, "I said what do you mean by I follow there.")
GF: Je disait quoi tu signifie par moi suivre là.
B: Hein ?
G: to itself: logIncident(HOSTILE_CUSTOMER, getUserID("Bernadette"))

(break)

A: Hello?
GF: Allô ?
B: Quoi ?
GE: What?
A: Well, forget about it. Do you think we can sign the contract by the end of the week?
GE: You want to say until the end of this week here?
B: Il faut que l'on parle à Phillipe.
GE: It is necessary that one talks to Phillipe.
A: One? Who do you mean?
GF: Un ? Qui signifies-tu ?
B: to herself: Le mec me rend folle! -- Phillipe !
G: to itself: logIncident(FURIOUS_CUSTOMER, getUserID("Bernadette"))
GE: Phillipe!
A: Yes, but I mean the other guy you were talking about.
GF: Oui, mais je signifie l'autre type tu as parlé.
B: Je n'ai parlé à personne !
GE: I didn't talk to anyone!
A: to himself: This girl drives me nuts! -- Now, Bernadette, we don't get anywhere this way.
G: to itself: logIncident(FURIOUS_CUSTOMER, getUserID("Andrew"))

GE: I'm sorry, Andrew. I don't understand what you want to say to me.
A: Okay, don't worry. I'll get all my stuff wrapped up and give it to John.
A: Talk to you later. Bye.
GF: Parle à toi plus tard ! Au revoir.
A: hangs up; aside: Dammit. I blew it up!
G: to itself: alert(SIS, TERRORIST, getUserID("Andrew"))
B: Au revoir. hangs up; aside: Merde, je l'ai bousillé!
G: to itself: alert(POLICE, MURDERER, getUserID("Bernadette"))

Exeunt.

I have use a real time translator for text online in second life.
I think it could be done for voice as well.
My good friend is from Brazil and speaks Portuguese.
We use a translator to type to each other
She types something in her language and it translates in mine. I have to say there are
only a few times where I have been left wondering what she was trying to say and mostly
it is for spelling inaccuracy. On my part I must remember to use standard English and
not common internet chatter.

So given that this application could handle speech irregularities. I think it would at
least give a good bases to have a conversation.

Today I was talking with my friend about languages. She thought I should learn
Portuguese and she should learn English. We had a very in depth conversation on
languages including if we should both learn Esperanto. Both of us understood perfectly
what the other was saying all with the help of a scripted instant translator.
