Hi, fellow language enthusiasts!

I'm starting to learn European Portuguese through self-study. Unfortunately, there is very little audio material available to me where I live (I'm in Belgium right now), and YouTube seems to offer mostly Brazilian Portuguese as well. It's not that I mind listening to Brazilian Portuguese so much as I'd like to develop a feel for the European prosody.

Basically, I was wondering if anyone might be able to point me towards an online source of spoken European Portuguese? Or anybody from Belgium who knows where I can find Portuguese audiobooks or things like that?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I forgot to ask - what authors (Brazilian or European) would you recommend for a beginner?

Reading recommendations will depend on your personal preferences and what level you're at in regards to Portuguese. I recommend finding Portuguese translations of books you already know you love (do the same for movies, too). You can also read from writers and poets that you know you like. There are also many parallel texts (Portuguese on one page, English on opposite) if you want to go that route. Also, instruction manuals & how-to books are a good way to start making sense of longer texts AND learn something you needed to learn anyhow.

Acclaimed authors as diverse as Lispector or Coelho or Pessoa aren't hard to start reading. They're certainly easier than Camões (the equivalent of starting w/ Shakespeare). In any case, though, getting through their works isn't a beginner's task.

How often are you doing things to smooth the learning curve? Reading webpages (at least starting with forums and wikipedia and the news) and doing web searches in Portuguese? That's my primary recommendation for starting out reading Portuguese, to integrate it into your natural reading and writing routine.

As for learning European Portuguese, I have a series of free online Portuguese lessons that cover both Brazilian and Continental Portuguese (including audio files with both variants). It might be useful for you while you look for other audio sources.

Here's a very good Portuguese site with lots of videos and word-for-word transcripts on Portuguese culture, news, technology, etc.
