Thanks psy88! For M. Medialis: you mignt be right, but for now I prefer to concentrate my efforts on learning languages from neighbouring countries. So I've started with English, then I'll go on with Dutch (not only are Belgium and the Netherlands close but I like their culture and they have a rich history).

The advice to visit England is definitely great. So when you have a chance, pop over. I
have a French friend here who tells me that when she first came here, she couldn't
speak (even though she knew English), but it only took a very short time to get used to
the accents. The more exposure you get, the better.
If possible, try taking an immersion class in English in England. I am not sure about
your age, but there are lots of immersion camps for Summer or Winter vacations for
students from abroad, and they are a great way to speak the language, and meet a lot of
foreign students who are trying the same thing.
Of course another method is to simply visit and speak to the natives. But until you can
visit, also try watching English/American TV, listen to music, read English books. TV I
recommend to get used to accents (or you can listen to podcasts or news etc.).
Good luck and have fun.

You don't have to fly to go to Japan. You could take the Serberian express all the way to NE of China and take a ferry across.
However, that kind of travel is for those who have the privilege of time.

You're written English is fine. Have some confidence!
Contrary to your mother's advice I would say study what you are interested in. It sounds like you are interested in travel, so maybe she has a point. But if you also enjoy Japanese culture then learning Japanese can make sense. Think about what you do in your leisure time: do you read manga, watch anime, etc.? (just guessing since you said you like Japanese culture.) Studying Japanese can be rewarding then, because you can start doing these things in Japanese and be having fun and studying language at the same time.
