I just have a question about learning Mandarin as a whole. I noticed that in a lot of
ADVANCED level Mandarin books the use of pin-yin seems lower, so therefore I am assuming
that through the Novice-Intermediate level, you pick up and learn a fair amount of
characters. But I am wondering, what if you are studying Chinese at a high level, like
really advanced? For Japanese I can identify the character and sounds fairly well and
simply put what the word sounds like into a dictionary and get the meaning.
I am wondering if Chinese works the same way or how advanced learners of Chinese master
their skills. It seems much more challenging than Japanese just the way the language is
set up.

I don't really understand your question. Are you asking how to look up characters in a dictionary?
