Anything from your local library.
If it's good, buy your own copy when the loan period is over.
If it's bad, hand it back and borrow something else. |

Suprised I didn't think of this...I don't even have a library card. Guess I'll have to get one; and I better find out how to get to the library...the only one I know of is downtown and I don't know how to get to it.
In your experience do public libraries, or even public school libraries, have good foreign language resources?

My experience is only of Scottish libraries, and they tend only to stock the "mass market" courses like Teach Yourself, Pimsleur etc. on the whole, but they can often borrow other more specialised books from elsewhere in the region (more like a US "county" than a "state") if they have them.
If you've got access to a school or a college library, they might have access to more specialist stuff.
Of course, you might find that they're not be able to help you, but you never know until you get there.
I've personally only finished one course I got out of the library, and it was a fairly short one. But I got to satisfy my curiosity, so it was certainly worth my time....
Edit: I've just looked at your original message again. The sort of books libraries have here is the sort of book that usually sells for under $20. It would certainly make sense to take a look.

Well, if you don't mind ordering from the Internet, I received Spanish Made Simple (1950s edition) and Berlitz Self-Teacher (c. 1949) for a penny and about $6, respectively on amazon. You could also look for the Living Language Beginners program which I saw a month ago for a penny. I really haven't used any of the programs I've mentioned extensively. I'm just saying there are some great deals out there if you are looking for them, if you don't mind used books.
I'd say go to the library and look for what works best for you, and see if you can get something cheap online before buying anything. At least that's what I'd do if I were starting out looking for resources again.
Good luck. |

I have both of those books too!! They are GREAT programs in my opinion, I love them. I have self teachers for Italian and portuguese and I've gone through the German and Spanish one's already :)
I have German Made Simple (1962) and Spanish Made Simple (1980)
They are seriously fantastic, I definitely recommend them. Make sure you listen to plenty of audio/radio/tv!!
Best of luck

Don't forget used bookstores as well as thrift shops.
