Bad foundation...Is there a correction? | ||

In all honesty, I'm not very happy with where I am in Spanish. I can read fairly well, listen to music, and watch tv (Somethings I might rewind and go over again, but sooner or later it "clicks") I understand around 80% or so.
Is there anything I can do to get my fluency up? I find that I have a lot of trouble speaking spontaneously, especially with advanced tenses like haber + past participle (subjunctive etc) I've been studying German and a little Italian, and I've found that I've made a ton of progress just by studying them on my own... I see two things:
1) Your passive skills are still a bit raw. 80% is certainly commendable, but it doesn't reach your own targets. In my experience, the only solution is massive exposure (as in all the time). 2) I see drilling as central to conversational fluency; maybe you can go through a few sets a day. I'm also a big fan of Splog's "connectors" approach. Connector description All in all, drilling and a temporary reliance on memorized connectors may make your conversation a bit wooden for a little while. This should eventually wear off. A bad founation will be hardly removed, as long as you are going at Spanish. The best way to improve Spanish will be to learn German more and compare it with Spanish.

Obviously, going to a Spanish speaking country would help a lot, or at least finding a ton of native speakers and immersing yourself. Maybe it's feasible for you this summer? Edited by Johntm on 28 February 2010 at 5:17am 1 person has voted this message useful |
