I was hoping someone here could offer me some insight into the various uses of the word "вообще"... I understand it when it's used like the English "in general," or in phrases like "я вообще не пью," but I've seen it used in dozens of other situations, sometimes seemingly randomly inserted at the end of a sentence. I'd guess that it's one of those words (like "just" in English) that has dozens of meanings depending on the context.

огромное спасибо всем.

Well, in addition to the meanings you mentioned, it is often used kinda like the English word "like". For example, it can be used as a discourse particle:

Вообще я не знаю, что делать. (I, like, don't know what to do.)

or as a filler word:

Это, вообще, было весело. (it was, like, fun.)

It can also be used as exaggeration:

Круто, вообще! (Way cool!)

And sometimes, when a sentence starts with "Вообще,.." it roughly corresponds to "Actually, ...".

Hope that helps.

I think it roughly corresponds to "all things considered, ..." or "overall, ..." but more informal. As Russianbear points out, sometimes "like" is used in the same way.

I also had trouble with this particle. Young people over-use it to an annoying extent - just in the same way as the american "like". At one point in Belarus, I was also using it all the time (in an effort to compensate lack of vocabulary by a more fluid speech-pattern, I suppose).

Я вообще думаю, что экономические условия внутри России на будушее не улушчают! - I, in general, think that economic conditions inside Russia for future won't improve.

I found in dictionary this word means: in general.. another way is: Главным Образом which means "mainly".

I use ВЗАГАЛІ mostly since I speak russian with Ukrainian.

Perhaps we can roughly classify meanings like so:

1) В действительности [in reality]
"Вообще, он инженер по образованию."
(In reality he is an engineer by training.)

2) Взяв в целом, в общем, обобщая [in general]
"Говоря вообще, не входя в частности, люди самолюбивы." Словарь Даля
(Speaking in generalities, people are selfish. From the dictionary by Даль)

3) Всегда, при всяких условиях [under any circumstances]
"Вообще никогда со мной об этом не говори!"
(Never speak to me about this, ever.)

4) Colloquial meaning:
Ну, вообще!
Well, really!

Вообще уже!
Really there!

Just to clarify things for our Russian language learners, the word "ВЗАГАЛІ" does not mean anything in Russian.

вообще in colloquial speech is pronounced вооще.It is used on its own (вооще!) and I think it means something like надо же or не фига себе.No way!
