Well, this problem seems to have been resolved now. I received a copy of the Minjung Essence 4th Edition Korean-to-English dictionary for Christmas (which was quite unexpected, but very welcome). It is a used copy, but is in literally perfect condition and was acquired for much less than the price of a new one.
Just from briefly looking through it, I can already tell I am going to like this dictionary much better than the Berlitz one. It is leather bound (not technically a "useful" feature, but still worth mentioning), has indented thumb tabs for each Hangul consonant, has a huge number of entries (about 3.5 times that of the Berlitz), and is loaded with example sentences (especially for the more common verbs). While I know the Berlitz is a concise dictionary (and thus intentionally keeps the details brief), I didn't realize just how much more detailed the Minjung dictionary would be. Here is an example of the difference in scale between the two dictionaries: - The Berlitz dictionary uses 3 lines to cover the verb 보이다. - The Minjung dictionary uses 3 *columns* (1.5 pages) for that same verb! (Both dictionaries are 2 columns per page with similar font size and the Minjung pages are slightly larger overall.) To be fair, I should point out that the Berlitz dictionary retails for only $15.95 (vs $115.50 for the Minjung or, more accurately, $231.00 to cover both directions like the Berlitz does), so it wasn't really a fair fight to begin with.
