Has anyone used FSI German (both volumes)? What were your results? I was able to find the first volume at my used bookstore for $8.00! I looked at it and, although I know most of what's in it, I think the drills and some of the vocabulary will be useful to me. I was wondering how far level two will take you? Thanks!

I don't know if you know but it's also available to download for free for http://fsi-language-courses.org (though maybe it's an older version?).
I recently got it and am also curious as to the level reached with it.

Yeah! I'm a huge fan of that site! It is actually the exact same, I just work better, for some reason, with hard copies... :o)

The FSI Basic German Course is great (FSI courses in general are effective anyway), but
it has its cons:

1) It's old. Some words which were used back then are no longer in use, and are
considered offensive.
2) They are boring. You'll really need a lot of determination to get through the whole
course.
3) It's very "formal", as we FSI fans prefer to put it (others would call it
"outdated").

I'm a fan of the FSI courses, but I'm aware of it's downturns. Some tips when using
FSI:

1) The drills will bore you out. You'll need a lot of determination to keep going.
2) Be aware of words that are no longer in use. (some are offensive in today's
language)
3) Don't use it alone. Supplement it with other stuff. (DW Podcasts etc.)

Use it alongside some other course (I would recommend Assimil), and jump between the two when one gets boring and your determination is fading. That solves most of the (legitimate) problems mpete16 pointed out.
