Cantonese learning material in Mandarin | ||

My Mandarin is quickly approaching basic fluency. I'm hoping to get there before I go to China. I'll be in China for a year, starting March 1st. Hooray! But there's a problem. Booh! I'll be spending my year in Foshan, Guangdong. This means that everyone will be speaking Cantonese! Now, I'm hoping to get by with Mandarin, but it will hardly be the perfect immersion opportunity, will it? I'm slowly realizing I'm gonna have to start learning Cantonese, if nothing else then to make sure I don't waste this perfect opportunity. So there doesn't seem to be that much great material for Cantonese. There's Pimsleur, but only 30 lessons, and there's the Teach Yourself and all that stuff (but no Assimil, it seems!). But I've been a bit spoiled by ChinesePod lately. The obvious answer is: learn Cantonese through Mandarin! This will give my Mandarin a boost and I'm kind of assuming there's better material availible in Mandarin than in English. So here's the main question of this thread: Are you aware of any Cantonese resources in Mandarin? Are they any good? Secondary questions: How well can one get by in Guangdong with Mandarin, and do you have any tips for English (or Swedish or French, for that matter) resources on Cantonese? I know people, from Guangzhou, who said they grew up having to speak both Mandarin and Cantonese. These people are fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese. As Foshan is a major city in Guangdong you may be able to use Mandarin there.

I know that in Guangzhou itself, it is common for foreigners to only know Mandarin and not Cantonese. It's usually expected, in fact, as I have heard many complaints from Cantonese learners about how everyone first talks to them in Mandarin instead of in Cantonese.
However, a big factor there is that Guangzhou has a large immigrant population from northern provinces. I'm less sure about Foshan. More on topic, in HK I bought a book (with audio CD) to teach mainlanders Cantonese. The book uses hanyu pinyin instead of Cantonese romanization. The book is http://www.jointpublishing.com/books/bookdetail.asp?ISBN=962 0425030. You can see from the description "本教程主要是為以普通話作母語的人士..." that the book is intended for Mandarin speakers. I don't know the quality, since I actually never used the book. A seperate topic, I have been enjoying learning slang from these posts at http://www.youtube.com/user/mantsin.
Probably the audio is too complicated if you don't know any Cantonese, but at least they write out the slang for you. This is only relevant in that the youtube videos are created in Foshan. 1 person has voted this message useful | |
