It said there were only 11 other people who have taken up Laotian on this forum, why is
that? I am having a lot of fun with Laotian, grammar is quite easy making for less study
while the writing system is harder - which I like in a language - making for more
practice.

I only started today and I've had quite a lot of fun with it :D

I believe people are more interested in neighboring languages like Thai, the Northern dialects of Thai are mutually intelligible with Laotian.

It is a nice language though :)

There are many people studying Thai, which is practically Lao. The difference is about the same as the difference between American and British English. I have never met a single Thai or Laotion, that could not understand the other.

Really? I didn't know Laotian and Thai were so similar.

What are the differences?

Mostly the difference is in accent and emphasis. However they are basically the same language.

Edit-
Here is a video demonstrating Thai (the four primary dialects) and a discussion on Laotian as well

I think their scripts look rather similar too. I noticed this when I saw my name written in both side by side.

For comparison, here is the word for "Laos"...

...in Laotian: ປະເທດລາວ

...in Thai: ประเทศลาว
