Hm... interesting. Is the reader new or old?

In case you didn't know, Sweden is the Mecca of political correctness at the minute and it is reflected throughout society... The Vikings don't quite fit in with that worldview for several reasons and have been suffering from bad PR. I would have thought a modern reader would be more likely to be about a refugee from the middle east... who is also a single mother and works in an eco-friendly co-operative farm.... or something like that! Nothing at all wrong with any of that, but all good things in moderation... The Vikings were awesome and I am glad if they're sticking with them for language courses.

"fredlig" means peaceful, "freidig", however means "brave" in old Norse. Today it has different meaning.
("freidig" would be Norwegian for "frejdig")

Norwegian to the rescue!! :-) Now that you mention it, it rings a faint bell....

The reader is about thirty years old, I think. It still uses words like 'grammophonskiva,' for example.

If you're interested in looking at it more, it's called Swedish: An Elementary Grammar-Reader, and is written by Gladys Hird.

You've already read the cultural/historical stuff that it gives because of the recordings, so you'll know how its style is.

I see... :-) Well I think it seems like a nice book and honestly I wasn't exaggerating much in previous comment. This type of material is much nicer.

However, some of the stuff in those texts about "Erik and Kerstin" is not 100% as a native would say it. Not sure if that is due to the author of the reader not being Swedish... or perhaps she chose different words just to enable her to stick with simpler vocabulary or make a point about grammar. But that's why I stumbled a few times when I read the texts.. because occasionally it's just not as I would have expected.

Yes, I think it is just that the author is just working up gradually. By the end you are supposed to be able to read original plays and short stories in Swedish, a few of which it has included at the back.
