It turns out that since I know Spanish, I can read Portuguese written material without too much difficulty and understand some easier Portuguese conversations as well, even without having studied Portuguese itself. But for some reason, I can only pick up a word or two in Portuguese songs. I think songs should be easier to understand than conversations, but with Portuguese it just isn't the case. Did anyone ever have such experience?

The pronunciations of words that are spelled almost identically can be completely different. "Carro" is spelled the same in both languages but in Portuguese it's pronounced as if it was written "Caju" in Spanish.

Look up the lyrics to some Portuguese songs and follow along, you'll pick up the differences in pronunciation pretty quickly if you put your mind to it.
