I will be studying in Turkey for 10 months at the university level. By completing Assimil Le Turc sans Peine, and conversing in Turkish everyday for the 10 months, will I be able to reach at least basic fluency in Turkish? I would hope to attain advanced fluency by the time I leave.

Additionally, I will be taking two elementary-level Turkish courses during my time there. I also have available to me Teach Yourself Turkish by David Pollard and Asuman Çelen Pollard, and Elementary Turkish by Lewis V. Thomas.

Turkish is one of those languages you can definitely learn well living there for 10 months. IMHO if you are serious about it, if you will have finished le Turc sans peine by the time your arrive in Turey and spend 10 months there, you will have more than basic fluency in the language.

Good to know! Indeed, I was planning on finishing Le Turc sans Peine before I arrive.

My native English teacher has been in Turkey for several month and he is definetly fluent. Hell, he knows some words even Turkish native speakers don't.

Are you going to use the FSI materials for reference as well?

I'll start Turkish sometime this year, and I'll be using Kurtuluş Öztopçu's Elementary Turkish, a university textbook. Wishing you the best in your studies.

LatinoBoy84: No. The only FSI materials I can bear to use are their Programmatic courses.

dolly: I studied half of the first volume of that book. It's OK. I wouldn't use it unless you're in a class. Thanks for the wish! The same to you! :)
