It has been known for some time that the Jouyou Kanji list would be revised as there are some kanji on it that are nearly never used and other non-jouyou kanji that are actually in everyday usage. The current list of Jouyou kanji was introduced in 1981 – so it is high time that there are some updates.
There have been several assumptions so far as to which kanji would be added to the new Jouyou list. Finally in January a temporary draft was published that includes the following 191 characters: 挨曖顎宛嵐 畏萎椅彙茨 咽淫唄鬱怨 媛艶旺岡臆 俺苛牙瓦潰 諧崖蓋骸葛 鎌韓玩伎亀 畿臼嗅巾僅 錦惧串窟熊 詣憬稽隙桁 拳鍵舷股虎 梗喉乞傲駒 頃痕沙挫采 塞埼柵刹拶 斬恣摯餌鹿 叱嫉腫呪袖 羞蹴哨憧拭 尻芯腎須裾 凄醒脊戚羨 煎腺詮箋膳 狙遡爽曽痩 踪捉遜汰唾 堆戴誰旦綻 憚緻酎貼嘲 諜捗椎爪鶴 諦溺填妬賭 藤瞳栃頓貪 丼那奈梨謎 鍋匂虹捻罵 剥箸氾汎阪 斑眉膝肘訃 阜聘蔽餅璧 蔑蜂貌頬勃 昧枕蜜冥麺 冶弥闇喩湧 妖瘍沃拉辣 藍璃慄侶瞭 瑠呂弄籠麓 脇 Furthermore, the following 5 kanji currently on the Jouyou list will be taken off the list: 銑 錘 勺 匁 脹 That makes a total of 2131 kanji on the new list, which is called 新常用漢字表 (shin jouyou kanji hyou) so far. Some ON and kun readings will be added, too. (Actually I was surprised to find that “watashi” is not an official reading of 私. That will be changed, however.) You can find the article of the Asahi Newspaper (in Japanese) here, and an article (in English) of the Japan Times Online here. And there is also some mention of it at Wikipedia. I personally don’t have a problem with this revised table because I’ve seen quite a lot of those “new” kanji in regular use, like 嵐 (arashi), 俺 (ore), 誰 (dare) or 藤 (TOU, fuji), to name just a few. It’s not like they are completely new or something. The only kanji that is giving me a headache is 鬱 (UTSU). 29 strokes!!! Who would want to write that one regularly by hand? Well, the article at Asahi includes three tables of the new Jouyou Kanji with their ON and kun readings. Unfortunately, they are very difficult to read. That's why I prepared a table for myself with 5 columns: kanji, ON, kun, meaning, example. The columns for meanings and examples are still empty as I haven't gotten around to do them. Thanks a lot, this interesting info!
I wonder when they will take out from the list stupid things like 賜 or 璽! There are kanji on the joyo list that I have never seen in 5 years of living in Japan! On the other hand, stuff like 炒 or the reading ところ for 処 --which are very frequent-- are still not on the list. BTW, I am familiar with 鬱, but in Japan it is almost always written in hiragana (e.g. うつ病) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Well adding even more characters will make it even harder to learn the Jouyou Kanji when I start studying Japanese more. But if they're more useful, then I don't really mind. I'm glad they did this.

I'm all for updating the jouyou kanji list. But at the same time, somehow I don't think it will exceed 2225 characters or so.

Today the kanji subcommittee submitted its proposal for the 新常用漢字表. 196 kanji will be added and 5 withdrawn, bringing the grand total of 常用漢字 to 2136. The goal of the reform is to reflect the increasing number of kanji used in everyday life, a consequence of the "変換文化" caused by the spread of PCs and mobile phones.
