OK, I was beginning to think that perhaps Russians hotels counted time in a different way from the rest of the world.

I think another variant would be ''Я заказал номер''.And ''на 5 суток'' would be more appropriate.
To me 'Я снял номер' feels somewhat wrong and it means that I'm already staying in that room.e.g.You are in Moscow and you are talking to a friend on the phone.He asks you how long will you be staying in Moscow/in that hotel and you tell him ''Я снял номер на 5 суток''.
But going to a hotel's reception and saying ''Я снял номер на 5 суток'',would be wrong.In this case you should say ''Я забронировал/заказал номер на 5 суток''.
