Can anyone recommend a good Somali-English dictionary? I am working with a Somali refugee, and his English is
already decent, but he is finding it difficult to expand his vocabulary without a dictionary. I didn't find the reviews for the books listed on Amazon.com very helpful (I suspect some were fake). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Dunwoody Press publishes some materials in Somali, including a Somali--English dictionary (but not English-Somali). Their products tend to be quite expensive, though. Here's the webpage on the dictionary:

There are a lot of Somali students at the school where I work, and we bought a load of the "English-Somali Somali-English Dictionary" by Maxamud Jaamac Qoorsheel from Simon Wallenberg Press (ISBN 1-84356-007-0).
It's not great, in that it mostly gives a single one-word translation for each entry. This lack of detail increases the risk of dictionary-based mistakes. On the other hand this could be an advantage for students with undeveloped reading skills as they don't have a lot of text to plough through. It's quite clear and easy to use. I did a bit of research before we ordered these, and it seems to be the best English-Somali dictionary available at the moment... 1 person has voted this message useful |
