I cant get it out of my head, despite what some people have advised me, that pre and suffixes should be taught in Spanish one and two. ("You'll get more into that if you study Spanish at the University level." I've been told.)

However, what good is it to just know a few dozen adjectives and a couple hundred vocabulary if I'm not going to learn how to actually use them? I've been debating adding suffixes and prefixes to my Independent Study Regiment in Spanish this summer.

If I learned Suffixes and Prefixes wouldn't they help my reading and speaking comprehension by allowing my to recognize adjectives that are serving as adverbs and nouns?

I've noticed how place names and machines are just nouns that take on certain suffixes to modify their meaning:

Tostadora, libreria, cafeteria, etc.

What do you guys, my fellow language lovers and learners, think?

Prefixes and suffixes are indeed an important part of Spanish, however it doesn't seem efficient to teach them in early Spanish classes. Spanish 1 and 2 (and 101/102) are designed to allow students to get an understanding of grammar, and increase their vocabulary a bit; that's all. Suffixes and prefixes come in later classes when the focus shifts from grammar to reading, speaking, and listening. The reasoning is this: there's not much use in a student knowing all the suffixes and prefixes if they don't understand how to put those nouns together into a sentence to create a thought.
